Hotel du Vin Henley
We enjoyed a welcome break at the fabulous Hotel du Vin, a cosy retreat in the heart of Henley, snuggled alongside the banks of the River Thames.
The beauty of a Hotel du Vin is that you feel like you’re checking into a beautiful house, not a hotel. It’s all very relaxed but sophisticated at the same time, with friendly staff on hand to welcome us and show us to our room. But we were running late – now there’s a surprise! – and we had to make our dinner reservation for 8pm.
So what do you do when eating at the hotel of wine? Indulge! That’s what we did, starting with a glass of champagne followed by smoked salmon for me and duck liver parfait for Tina…..followed by the wine, two whole bottles of it! Sacré bleu! So in the red corner, to accompany Tina’s partridge, a bottle of Malbec (Catena, 2016)…and in the white corner, a bottle of Chenin Blanc to help me with my whole guinea fowl. Superb wine with super food…an excellent combination.
Somehow we even managed to squeeze in desserts with a healthy serving of lemon tarte and a mighty chocolate mousse which all but defeated Tina.
That was a meal and a half and saw us off to a wonderful night’s sleep…it was that good I even took a picture of the manufacturer’s label…which reminds me!
Our replenishing stay at Hotel du Vin ended with a light breakfast and a brief walk along the banks of the Thames and as we headed back to Oxford we resolved to return and ensure we spent more time in the picturesque Henley.
