Staffordshire University London and LMA to join with Here East to deliver the programme. The scholarship programme will provide full undergraduate tuition and supporting loan supplement to local students from east London.
Today, Delancey’s Here East launches a new scholarship programme to support local young people in east London through higher education courses at the world-class universities based on the innovation campus.
The programme, starting in September 2021, will support three young people to study at undergraduate level at a university based at Here East – Staffordshire University London and LMA institution for media, music and performing arts.
The programme is open to secondary school pupils currently residing in Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest, aiming to deliver on-the-ground impact to the east London community and supporting the potential of young people in the area through the world-class institutions and business based at Here East.
Here East is a catalyst for growth and London’s fastest-growing technology and innovation campus. Once the former Press and Broadcast Centre for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, it has been transformed into a thriving technology-driven community and is the most successful post-Olympic regeneration project in the world.
Since opening in 2016, Here East has remained committed to ensure the lasting legacy of the Olympic Games in east London and this programme represents the latest community initiatives from the campus to ensure that young people and residents continue to feel the benefits of Here East and its tenants.
The programme will offer full tuition fees, a maintenance loan supplement worth £2,700 per year, facilitation of relevant work experience placements within the Here East business community and mentoring opportunities during the course of the degree. The programme is particularly aimed at students who are the first in their families to go to university, face financial barriers in attending university, or are caregivers.
The participating universities offers a wide range of undergraduate courses across multiple disciplines including Staffordshire University London’s undergraduate and postgraduate courses focus on future digital and technical innovations in Computer Sciences, Cyber Security, Concept Art for Games and Film, Esports and Games Design and LMA range of undergraduate courses including Digital Film and TV production, Music Performance, Acting, Dance and Musical Theatre.
Gavin Poole, CEO of Here East, comments: “Ensuring that young people in east London benefit from the academic institutions and business at Here East has always been a high priority for us and we are delighted to launch this scholarship programme and make a real contribution to the lives of young people in our area. Many young people face barriers in attending university due to socio-economic circumstances in our surrounding areas and it is right that we work to remove these barriers to ensure students can live up to their full potential. The universities based on our campus offer world-leading undergraduate courses across a range of subjects and students at Here East will also benefit from the lively business communities with opportunities for placements, training and employment.”
Richard Wallace Co-founder of LMA comments “This is an amazing programme that Delancey’s Here East have launched. As an institution LMA is all about giving young people the vision and importantly the opportunity to follow their passions in the creative industry with world leading tuition. We pride ourselves on having over 60% of LMA students being ‘first in family to university’ with an inclusive ethos that reflects the diversity of our local communities. The Here East Scholarship further supports this ethos to allow talented young people the chance to realise their potential.”
