Stephen Clarke: Leading the Way at the ATOM Festival of Science & Technology

Stephen Clarke, our Principal at Cherwell College Oxford, is not only a distinguished leader and former British diplomat, but also a passionate advocate for science and education. As the Chairman of ATOM Festival of Science & Technology, Stephen plays a pivotal role in bringing world-class scientific discussions and innovations to the heart of Abingdon. Stephen’s leadership ensures that the festival remains dynamic, inclusive, and engaging for people of all ages.

A Vision for Science Engagement

With a background in international education policy and social development, Stephen has long championed the importance of making knowledge accessible. His extensive experience-ranging from advising businesses and NGOs on education and human rights, to working as a First Secretary for the UK Government at the British Embassy in Ukraine, has given him a deep understanding of how education can inspire and transform lives.

This perspective is at the core of his work with the ATOM Festival, ensuring that it not only showcases scientific excellence, but also encourages curiosity and participation from the wider community.

ATOM Festival: A celebration of Science and Innovation

The ATOM Festival of Science & Technology is an annual event that brings together leading scientists, companies, and institutions to share the latest advancements in science and technology.

Running from 15th-26th March 2025, this year’s festival will feature an exciting lineup of events, including the popular Science Market, hands-on workshops, and the prestigious Peagram Lecture. Under Stephen’s leadership, the festival has evolved to include diverse event formats, making science more accessible than ever before. He emphasises the importance of inclusivity stating: “For the last couple of years, we have been trying to offer events in a variety of formats; there have been walks and visits to local science hubs, kids’ workshops where they can literally get their hands on real science, as well as the Science Market which takes place in Abingdon Market Place.” The festival’s commitment to affordability ensures that all families have the opportunity to participate. Ticket prices for children’s workshops are capped at just £2.50, with many events, such as the Science Market and FameLab Academy Finals Evening, being completely free.

Bringing Science to life

This year’s festival will feature leading experts, including whale and dolphin conservation specialist Mark Simmonds OBE and historian Lucy Jane Santos, who will showcase the fascinating, and sometimes unsettling, history of radioactive consumer products. The event will conclude with the Annual Peagram Lecture by Professor Tony Hey CBE, exploring quantum theory and the future of quantum computing. Beyond the festival, the ATOM Society continues to inspire scientific curiosity year-round with engaging talks and discussions.

A Legacy of Learning

Stephen Clarke’s dual role as Principal of Cherwell College Oxford and Chairman of the ATOM Festival reflects his dedication to nurturing intellectual growth. Cherwell College, known for its Oxbridge-style tutorial approach, shares a philosophy with ATOM-encouraging students to think critically, ask questions, and embrace a lifelong passion for learning. Thanks to Stephen’s leadership, ATOM Festival continues to inspire the next generation of scientists, ensuring that science remains an exciting, accessible, and integral part of our community.

Whether you’re a student, a professional, or simply curious about the wonders of the universe, ATOM Festival offers something for everyone-bringing science to life right on your doorstep.
