Local youngster Libby created the winning outfit for one of the Palace’s famous mice models, after her entry was adjudged to be the best ahead of hundreds of hopefuls who entered the competition.

The diminutive, costumed characters have been a “mice” feature in Christmas at Blenheim Palace’s indoor theme for many years – and this year is no exception, as they appear in the State Rooms as part of this year’s Sleeping Beauty story.

A delighted Libby, aged six, said: “When my mum found out that I had won, she ran up the stairs and wouldn’t stop shouting my name, I had to tell her to be quiet!

“I have decided to call my mouse Sleeping Beauty, my favourite part of it is the glitter that I have used in it. My nana is coming to visit Blenheim Palace in a couple of weeks so I can’t wait for her to find it.”

Her design featured a Blenheim Palace crown, Christmas jewellery and a rose for Sleeping Beauty and has been created and displayed in the State Rooms for thousands of visitors to enjoy as part of the Christmas at Blenheim Palace experience.

Libby’s idea was chosen and handmade by award-winning TV and film prop maker Clare Elliot, who has previously made models for family favourites such as Postman Pat and Wind in the Willows.

Clare, senior designer for Culture Creative, said: “Libby’s design was full of notes and instructions which kept me on my toes as I set about bringing it to life. The Blenheim Palace crown was what particularly stood out and I loved how she managed to incorporate Blenheim, Sleeping Beauty and Christmas into her mouse.”

The carefully costumed mous-terpiece takes pride of place in the Palace until New Year’s Day, after which Libby will be given her mouse to treasure forever.

The prize does not end there – Libby also received six tickets for her family and friends to the exclusive preview evening of Christmas at Blenheim Palace last month. The preview included a walk around the mesmerising outdoor illuminated trail, which meanders through the glorious grounds of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Her winning costume also entitled her a festive Afternoon Tea for six at The Orangery and a special goody bag filled with treats from Hotel Chocolat. She also won a short break for up to six people at Blenheim Palace Lodge Retreat, by Darwin Escapes.
