Mills & Reeve welcomes new IP and ESG partner set to boost its offering to fast growth technology businesses
Alex Woolgar joins Mills & Reeve’s Oxford office to support innovative businesses in all stages of growth.
Alex joins the firm from Deloitte, where he was a director in the IP & technology team and led Deloitte’s legal ESG practice.
He’ll be based in Mills & Reeve’s newest office in Oxford but will also spend time in London and Cambridge. He’ll add to the team’s existing IP capability, help drive the firm’s IP presence in Oxford and Thames Valley region and support in growing and managing the practice.
Alex specialises in advising innovative clients, many of which are start-ups and scale-ups in the technology and cleantech sectors, on legal and commercial strategies to maximise their intangible value. He also advises on a range of ESG related matters, having grown the Deloitte legal UK ESG practice from scratch in his former role.
Alex said: “I’m delighted to join a firm that I have long admired from afar. Mills & Reeve is known for investing in the innovation economy and combining exceptional legal work with a focus on people – its own and clients – above all else. I don’t think there could be a better fit for how I try to practise.
“I look forward to contributing to Mills & Reeve’s continuing investment and growth, in both Oxford and Thames Valley, and the technology sector. I’m fortunate that my job involves working with the brilliant people who are building new technologies and ventures, many of which will have a lasting, positive impact. I can’t wait to get stuck in.”
Mark Pearce, partner and head of IP at Mills & Reeve, added: “The firm’s existing IP practice has demonstrated steady and significant growth in the last 5 years. IP is a crucial part of supporting our clients in both the technology and life science sectors. The opportunity exists to continue this growth and to establish Mills & Reeve as one of, if not the, leading IP practice outside of London and particularly in the Thames Valley.
“Alex’s arrival will help drive further growth in the wider technology sector as he delivers sophisticated IP advice to clients in the region. We’re absolutely delighted to have recruited such a high quality and motivated partner and one who will fit so well into our team. Alex’s recruitment demonstrates again our commitment to being recognised as the “go to” firm for growing, IP heavy businesses in Oxford and the Thames Valley.”
