The Story Museum: Bringing Stories to Life in Magical Ways
The Story Museum is no ordinary museum. Nestled in the heart of Oxford, this unique, immersive space is dedicated to celebrating the power of storytelling in all its forms. Whether through interactive exhibitions, live performances, or creative workshops, The Story Museum is on a mission to enrich lives—especially young lives—through the magic of stories.
A Place Where Stories Come to Life
Unlike traditional museums filled with artefacts behind glass, The Story Museum invites visitors to step inside the world of stories. Through multi-sensory galleries, interactive displays, and hands-on storytelling experiences, children and adults alike can explore imaginative worlds, meet beloved characters, and even become part of the story themselves.
From mythical legends to modern classics, the museum’s exhibitions offer a dynamic, ever-changing experience designed to delight, inspire, and educate. The aim? To encourage families to discover stories together, fostering a lifelong love of reading, creativity, and imagination.
Engaging Schools Through Storytelling
The Story Museum is also a champion of literacy and education, offering engaging workshops for schools that use storytelling to enhance learning and inspire young minds. Led by teaching professionals, these workshops bring stories to life in a way that captivates students, helping them to develop language skills, confidence, and creativity.
With a curriculum-based approach, the museum’s school programmes provide an invaluable resource for teachers, ensuring that children not only improve their literacy but also develop a deeper appreciation for the power of stories.
Alice’s Day: A City-Wide Celebration
Each July, Oxford is transformed into a Wonderland of imagination as The Story Museum leads Alice’s Day, an annual festival celebrating Lewis Carroll’s iconic tale. Partnering with museums, galleries, shops, and community groups across the city, the festival brings together families, book lovers, and storytellers to celebrate Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland through performances, activities, and creative events—many of which are free to attend.
Stories That Make a Difference
Beyond its walls, The Story Museum works with community partners and schools to create impactful storytelling projects that bring people together and provide new opportunities for learning and self-expression. Through its outreach work, the museum helps individuals of all backgrounds connect with stories, develop new skills, and find joy in creativity.
One of its most ambitious projects is the 1001 Stories Collection, a growing archive of the world’s greatest tales, carefully curated to preserve and share stories from different cultures, traditions, and time periods. By collecting, researching, and reimagining these stories, the museum ensures that generations to come can continue to learn from and be inspired by them.
The Power of Storytelling
As one young visitor described their experience:
“From the second I stepped into the building, my journey has been one of new adventure and grand excitement.”
With its innovative approach to storytelling, The Story Museum is proving that stories are not just for reading—they are for experiencing, sharing, and celebrating.
