Abingdon & Witney College hosted its prestigious Student of the Year Awards 2026 at the magnificent Blenheim Palace on Wednesday 8th July, bringing together staff, students, parents, and guests for an unforgettable evening of celebration and inspiration.
Held annually, the event recognises the achievements of exceptional students from across the College’s 11 faculties. This year’s ceremony showcased not only academic excellence but the resilience, determination, and creativity that define the College’s student community.
The evening featured a stunning interval performance from Performing Arts students and beautifully arranged table displays designed by students from the College’s Propeller programme. The event truly embodied the collaborative spirit and talent that run throughout the College.
With around 12,000 students enrolled, the awards honour just 22 individuals – one for Inspirational Student and one for Overall Achievement from each faculty. From these, one is selected as the Overall Student of the Year, the highest individual honour awarded by the College.
This year, the coveted title went to Luke Payne, a Level 3 Carpentry apprentice at our Bicester Construction Skills Centre, employed by Dorchester Living. Luke was nominated for his outstanding resilience, commitment and personal growth throughout his apprenticeship journey, overcoming significant challenges to become a highly skilled and respected Level 3 carpenter. His dedication, leadership on site, and willingness to mentor others have made him an invaluable member of the team and a deserving award recipient.
“Luke’s achievement is thoroughly deserved and reflects the qualities that make a great apprentice and future construction professional. Throughout his time at our Bicester Construction Skills Centre, he has demonstrated exceptional resilience, determination and a commitment to developing his skills to the highest standard. He has overcome challenges with a positive attitude, earned the respect of his peers and colleagues, and consistently led by example. We are incredibly proud to see Luke recognised as Abingdon & Witney College’s Overall Student of the Year and look forward to seeing what he achieves next.”
