Putting the Human Back into HR: Why Experience Matters More Than Ever

2nd Aug 2026

By Richard Rosser, CEO, B4

When Samantha Newton talks about HR, she doesn’t start with policies, procedures or employment law.

She starts with people.

It’s perhaps surprising given a career that has taken her through organisations including the National Trust, Unilever, Vets4Pets, Pets at Home, Copart and, most recently, Williams Racing, where she spent eight years helping leaders navigate one of the most challenging areas of business: people.

Now, as founder of Magenta HR and one of B4’s newest Connect Members, Samantha is bringing that experience to ambitious owner-managed businesses and decision makers that need experienced HR support without the cost or complexity of building a large in-house team.” I originally went into HR because I wanted to help people,” Samantha explains. “As my career developed, I realised good HR is about finding the right balance between the needs of the business and the needs of its people. When you get that balance right, everybody benefits.”

Every business is different

After working for some of the UK’s best-known organisations, Samantha realised the work she enjoyed most wasn’t operating within a large corporate machine. It was solving problems.

“I love the uncertainty,” she says. “I see every business as a puzzle. Every organisation is different, every leadership team is different and every situation needs a different solution. My job is to find the best outcome for everyone involved.”

That objective approach is one of Magenta HR’s greatest strengths.

Unlike an internal HR department, Samantha arrives without history, politics or preconceived ideas. She listens, assesses and provides practical, commercially focused recommendations based on years of experience supporting businesses with everything from everyday HR advice to complex investigations, grievances, disciplinaries, restructures and other high-risk employee relations matters.

Experience that businesses can trust

For many growing businesses, people challenges become increasingly complex long before they are ready to employ a full HR team.

Samantha believes that’s where experienced external support can make a real difference.

“Businesses aren’t just buying HR support, whether it’s day-to-day advice or navigating a complex employee issue, business owners value having someone who has dealt with similar situations many times before,” she says. “They’re buying experience. They’ve got somebody who has dealt with these situations before, understands the risks and can recommend the right course of action with confidence.”

Her ideal clients are businesses with fewer than 200 employees — organisations large enough to face significant people challenges but small enough that every decision genuinely impacts culture, performance and growth.

Rather than offering generic advice, Samantha works alongside business owners and leadership teams to develop practical solutions that fit their organisation.

Building relationships, not transactions

One theme came through repeatedly during our conversation: relationships.

For Samantha, HR is built on trust.

“I like getting to know people,” she says. “I like understanding their business, their challenges and what they’re trying to achieve. Those relationships matter because that’s how you really help people.”

It’s an approach that fits naturally with the B4 community.

Having recently joined B4, Samantha attended her first Corum event and immediately recognised something she had missed since leaving corporate life.

“It can be surprisingly lonely running your own business,” she says. “What impressed me was how open and honest everybody was. People weren’t trying to sell to each other. They were sharing experiences, discussing challenges and helping each other think differently.”

For Samantha, that’s exactly the type of environment where businesses grow stronger.

Sharing knowledge across the community

One of the reasons Samantha joined B4 wasn’t simply to meet potential clients.

It was to contribute.

With experience gained across multiple sectors and large organisations, she is keen to share practical insights through Corum discussions, leadership forums and B4’s wider business community.

Sometimes that might mean helping a business owner think differently about a difficult employee situation. Other times it may simply be offering reassurance that others have faced similar challenges.

As she puts it: “Everyone can learn something.”

That willingness to share knowledge is exactly what makes communities like B4 valuable.

Situation Check B4

A practical first step

Understanding that many business owners simply want some initial guidance before committing to external support, Samantha has developed a number of free online resources through the Magenta HR website.

Visitors can use her interactive Situation Check tool to assess an HR issue and receive practical guidance, or download a free HR Action Pack packed with checklists and useful resources.

It’s designed to help businesses understand their situation before deciding whether they need further support.

“I genuinely want to give business owners the confidence to deal with people issues before they become bigger problems.” Whether that’s ongoing HR support, advice on a challenging employee issue or acting as an independent Chair for a formal process, the aim is always to provide practical, proportionate guidance that works for the business.  Samantha says. “If someone can solve a problem using the resources I’ve created, that’s a positive outcome. And if they need further support, then we can have that conversation.”

While Magenta HR supports businesses across the full spectrum of HR, Samantha is particularly known for helping business owners navigate complex employee situations with confidence.

Welcome to B4

Samantha brings something that many growing businesses value highly: the ability to combine big-company experience with practical, down-to-earth advice tailored to smaller organisations.

We’re delighted to welcome Magenta HR to the B4 community and look forward to seeing Samantha share her knowledge across our Corum events, leadership discussions and wider member network.

If your organisation is facing people challenges, planning for growth or simply wants an experienced HR sounding board, Samantha would be delighted to have an initial conversation.
